What the Spirit IS SAYING to the churches

Jesus Christ, after He had been crucified, had risen from the dead, and ascended to be seated at the right hand of God the Father, the glorified Christ, the One clothed in a robe reaching to the feet, and girded across His chest with a golden sash.

His head and His hair white like white wool, like snow; and His eyes like a flame of fire.

His feet like burnished bronze, when it has been made to glow in a furnace, gave a message to seven churches that is even more current than the front page of the news paper.

When John saw Christ on the isle of Patmos he fell at His feet as dead. Why? Because He was seeing Jesus the judge.

Jesus concluded every message to each of the seven churches in Rev. Ch. 2 & 3 with, “Let anyone who has an ear listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches.”

Notice it says anyone with AN ear LISTEN! Most of us have two ears.

But Jesus said that if you have ONE ear that is willing to hear, Listen!

Also notice it says, “What the Spirit IS SAYING to the churches.

We’ll not cover the commendations He gave to each of these churches in detail.

Because the exhortations, the conditions that had to be met and the threatened judgements if the exhortations and conditions were not met are what is being left out of the majority of so-called gospel messages today.

If you are a preacher, pastor, or teacher and you’re reading this, and you’re preaching this feel good gospel that’s destroying this nation, I have a word for you:

Stop being pulpit prostitutes to a secular humanist society!

Teaching “pop psychology” and “hot tub” Christianity that dodges the tough issues of sin and righteousness!

Explaining your congregations sin rather than having them to confess it and renounce it, without which no one will see the Lord or the gates of heaven!

Stop it! In Jesus name!

Preach the Word!

Preach Jesus Christ and Him crucified!

Preach the crucified life!

Preach it in season and out of season!

Preach it without apology!

Preach it with intensity!

Preach it with passion!

Preach it with anointing!

Or go sell insurance, you’re not a preacher!

I know most of you have probably heard someone spout off:

Well, after we’re saved, all God sees is the blood of Jesus every time we sin!

Really? Jesus saw the sins of the seven churches!

If we say that we have fellowship with Him and {yet} walk in the darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth;

but if we walk in the Light as He Himself is in the Light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus His Son cleanses us from all sin. 1Jn.1:6,7

No walking in the light as He Himself is in the light, the blood of Jesus does NOT cleanse from all sin!

God is not a cosmic bell hop doting begninly in the heavens, looking down, giving smiling condolences to people committing sin!

No! He’s a consuming fire!

God is NOT blind to sin!

If He is, we’re serving the wrong God!

For if we (sin willfully) after receiving the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins,

but a terrifying expectation of judgment and THE FURY OF A FIRE WHICH WILL CONSUME THE ADVERSARIES. Heb. 10:26,27

It’s time to be real in Jesus name! Repent or else! That’s the message to the churches!

We begin with the church at Ephesus:

Seven facts about the Ephesians:

1 Jesus gave it ten points of commendation:

Patient endurance

Cannot tolerate evil doers

Tested those who claim to be apostles and are not

Found them to be false

Have patience

Bearing up for the sake of My name

Not grown weary Rev. 2:2-6

2 One point of condemnation Rev. 2:4-5

3 They had left their first love Rev. 2:5

4 They were commanded to repent and do their first works to be restored to God and their first love Rev. 2:5

5 If they would not do so they were to be removed Rev. 2:5

6 The whole church would be destroyed if terms were not met Rev. 2:5.

This would also be true of individuals.

7 Only the overcomer was promised heaven Rev. 2:7

Rev. 2:5; note, below)

6. The whole church would be destroyed if terms were not met (Rev. 2:5). This would also be true of individuals.

7. Only the overcomer was promised heaven (Rev. 2:7)

Only one point of condemnation:

'But I have {this} against you, that you have left your first love.

'Therefore remember from where you have fallen, and repent and do the deeds you did at first; or else I am coming to you and will remove your lampstand out of its place--unless you repent. Rev. 2:4,5

The lampstands are the churches Rev. 1:20

What could be the meaning of removing a church because of sin?

Certainly not taking it to heaven as a reward for sin!

The meaning is judgement and destruction, for this is the only penalty for sin: Rom. 6:23!

Anyone who tries to force the meaning that God is taking a church or individual to heaven while living in sin is making God an accomplice to evil! And don’t you forget it!

Isaiah has a word for the self anointed mental midgits who are doing this:

Woe to those who call evil good, and good evil; Who substitute darkness for light and light for darkness; Who substitute bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter!

Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes And clever in their own sight! Is 5:20,21

Let anyone who has an ear listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches!

The church at Smyrna:

3 commendations:

and poverty, but they were rich in the Lord. Rev. 2:9

Rev. 2:10,11....Jesus tells them, that they will be persecuted and to ....Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.

Let anyone who has an ear listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches. Whoever conquers (or is overcoming) will not be harmed by the second death. (NRSV)

The essence of the Gr. word for conquers here is those who keep on overcoming!

Conquerers are not caesar milk toast watered down, light in the loafers people!

Conquerers suit up with the full armor of God and win the victory!

Does that describe you?

Will not be harmed by the second death.....

What is the second death?:

Then death and Hades were thrown into the lake of fire. This is the second death, the lake of fire. Rev 20:14

But the cowardly, the unbelieving, the vile, the murderers, the sexually immoral, those who practise magic arts, the idolaters and all liars--their place will be in the fiery lake of burning sulphur. This is the second death. Rev. 21:8 (NIV)

Why would Jesus Christ give an exhortation to one of His churches to not fall short of overcoming or be thrown into the lake of fire if such was not possible??!!

Does this not also apply to individuals as well?!

Be faithful until death, and I will give you the crown of life.

Only the overcoming ones receive the crown of life.

And every Christian gets this crown.

If you don’t get this crown, you DO NOT make heaven!:

Happy the man who doth endure temptation, because, becoming approved, he shall receive the crown of the life, which the Lord did promise to those loving Him. Jam 1:12 YLT

Those loving Him....those who keep on loving Him!

So endure temptation, endure persecution until death and receive the glorious crown of life!

Fight the good fight of the faith, lay hold of eternal life!

Hallelujah, Jesus Christ the Lord is king!

Let anyone who has an ear listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches!

The church at Pergamos:

3 commendations

This church also had

works,......but we don’t want to talk about that, now do we?

Holding fast to Christ’s name

and not denying the faith. Rev. 2:13

It is possible for Christians to deny the faith or this and many other statements are false:

keeping faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and suffered shipwreck in regard to their faith. 1 Tim 1:19

But the Spirit explicitly says that in later times some will fall away from (deny) the faith, paying attention to deceitful spirits and doctrines of demons, by means of the hypocrisy of liars seared in their own conscience as with a branding iron, 1 Tim 4:1,2

Four things condemned here:

Holding the doctrine of Balaam

Eating things sacrificed to idols

Committing acts of immorality

Holding the doctrine of Nicolaitans Rev. 2:14,15

Balaam taught Balak to entice the Israelites to sin by eating things sacrificed to idols and to commit sexual immoralty.

Making the grace of God a license for immorality!

Nothing in all of Scripture even hints that these people are good people with bad doctrine.

Nothing positive or “nice” is ever said about people who make the grace of God a licence for immorality!

Jude has a few words for people who do this:

Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt I had to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints. For certain men whose condemnation was written about long ago have secretly slipped in among you. They are godless men, who change the grace of our God into a licence for immorality anddeny Jesus Christ our only Sovereign and Lord. Jude 3,4

Anyone who uses the grace of God a licence for immorality is a godless person who denies Jesus Christ our only Sovereign Lord!In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire. V.7Woe to them! They have taken the way of Cain; they have rushed for profit into Balaam's error; they have been destroyed in Korah's rebellion. V.11

This verse says these false teachers preach licence for profit!

Once saved always saved is an easy seller, and it fills the money buckets!

These are the men who are hidden reefs in your love feasts when they feast with you without fear, caring for themselves; clouds without water, carried along by winds; autumn trees without fruit, doubly dead (twice dead), uprooted; V.12

What could “twice dead” possibly mean?

Jude is talking in the present tense here with, “These are the men.....when they feast.....caring for themselves”, etc.

The only possible meaning here is that they were once born again.

They were dead spiritually (once dead).

They became alive spiritually through a regenerating, new creature in Christ experience (Jn.3:5; 2Cor.5:17).

They died spiritually again (Rom.8:12-14), therefore, “twice dead”.

They had the truth to begin with!

They are wild waves of the sea, foaming up their shame; wandering stars, for whom blackest darkness has been reserved for ever. V.13These are the men who divide you,

Not the ones speaking the truth against them!

These who make the grace of God a license for immorality cause divisions!

And Jude goes on: who follow mere natural instincts and do not have the Spirit. V.19

'Therefore repent; or else I am coming to you quickly, and I will make war against them with the sword of My mouth. Rev 2:16

Repentance is required of all backsliders!

That there is a possibility of backsliders not repenting is clear from the fact that if they did not repent, they would be judged.

Our precious brother Robert at The Narrow Way Ministry says in his song, “Don’t Believe THE Lie”:If you believe your soul secure yet in your sins you dwell the false grace message you believe will lead you into hell! And I say a hardy Amen and Amen!

Let anyone who has an ear listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches!

The church at Thyatira:

6 commendations:

And even Increased works Rev.2:19

There were four condemnations Rev.2:20,21:

Permitting a woman in the local church named Jezebel to teach, Permitting her to seduce My servants (Christians) to commit sexual immorality, Permitting her to seduce Christians to eat things sacrificed to idols, and Tolerating her in spite of impenitence, or not repenting.

Sounds really similar to holding to the teaching of Ballaam!

They tolerated her unrepentance!

Paul told the church at Corinth that they were arrogant for not removing a man from the church who had his father’s wife!

Paul handed this guy over to Satan for the possible destruction of the flesh!

He said:

But actually, I wrote to you not to associate with any so-called brother if he is an immoral person, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or a swindler--not even to eat with such a one.

For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Do you not judge those who are within {the church?}

But those who are outside, God judges. REMOVE THE WICKED MAN FROM AMONG YOURSELVES. 1 Cor.5:11-13

Paul used the word grace 110 of the 156 times it’s used in the N.T.!

Surely he new what grace was!

If the church in America would go back to proper church discipline under the banner of true grace, there would be a revival of holiness without which no man will see the Lord, that would sweep this nation!

All who did not repent of these heinous sins would be destroyed Rev. 2:22!

Jesus said to those in Thyatira who did not hold to this teaching of Jezebel:

Rev 2:25 'Nevertheless what you have, hold fast until I come.

Why would anyone need to hold fast to anything if they couldn’t lose it!

Let anyone who has an ear listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches!

The church at Sardis:

4 commendations:

They had works....there’s that word we don’t want to hear again...but continuing....

They had a name or reputation of being a live church, but were dead.

Their works were not perfect before God.

They had few godly members. Rev.3:1,2,4

Christ gave five commands to Sardis:

Be watchful,

Strengthen the things that remain,

Remember your teaching,

Hold fast,

Repent Rev.3:2,3

Jesus said: 'So remember what you have received and heard; and keep {it,} and repent. Therefore if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come to you. Rev 3:3

This does not refer to the second coming, but to Christ sending sudden judgment upon Sardis if the church would not repent!

There were only a few there who had not soiled their garments Rev.3:4 Jesus said THEY will walk with Me, for THEY are worthy!

'He who overcomes will thus be clothed in white garments; and I will not erase his name from the book of life, and I will confess his name before My Father and before His angels. Rev 3:5

Here Christ promises not to blot the name out of the book of life of any man who will obey the commands of Rev. 3:2-3.

What if some should refuse to obey these commands, would their names not be blotted out?

If we say such is impossible we accuse God of using vain threats on His people.

He definitely promised Moses, "Whosoever hath sinned against Me, HIM WILL I BLOT OUT OF MY BOOK" (Exodus 32:32-33).

The psalmist by the Holy Spirit prayed that God would blot out the names of Judas and all like him (Psalm 69:25-28 with Acts 1:20).

In Rev. 22:18-19 Christ again threatens to take the names of people out of the Book of Life if they take anything away from the words of the book of this prophecy.

The message here once again, Repent or else be destroyed!

Overcome or your name will be blotted out of the book of life which translates, No heaven!

Let anyone who has an ear listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches!

The church of Philadelphia:

4 commendations:

Little strength

Kept Christ’s Word

Not denied His name Rev. 3:8

Even with the commendations, Jesus said:

'I am coming quickly; hold fast what you have, so that no one will take your crown. Rev 3:11

There is absolutely no point to this statement if there is no possibility of a Christian losing their crown!

As the scriptures have already proven, no crown, no heaven! Js.1:12; Rev.2:10

Let anyone who has an ear listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches!

The church at Laodicea:

5 things about:

Neither cold nor hot

Lukewarm and nauseating

Proud and self-satisfied

Ignorant of true state Rev. 3:15-17

Jesus said: 'So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will spit (vomit) you out of My mouth. Rev 3:16

The city of Laodicea manufactured eye salve.

Both hot and cold water were needed to manufacture eye salve.

The plant was moved to a location farther away from the water sources.

By the time the hot water and cold water reached the new plant, they were both lukewarm.

You see, hot is useful and cold is useful but lukewarm is nauseating!

God hates lukewarmness! He cannot tolerate half heartedness!

Jesus Christ is either Lord of all or not at all!

Hallelujah to His majestic name!

'Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline; therefore be zealous and repent.

'Behold, I stand at the door and knock; if anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me. Rev 3:19,20

Jesus Christ is already outside of this church!

And I say He’s outside most churches today!

Is He knocking on the door of your heart trying to get back in?

If you’re trusting in a single moment of past faith to save you, God has a warning for you through Ezekiel the watchman:

"Again, when a righteous man turns away from his righteousness and commits iniquity, and I place an obstacle before him, he will die; since you have not warned him, he shall die in his sin, and his righteous deeds which he has done shall not be remembered; but his blood I will require at your hand. Ezek 3:20

The watchman warns that sin separates from God!

I’ve warned you today, repent or else be destroyed in an everlasting hell!

Jesus first sermon was to repent:

Now after John had been taken into custody, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God,

and saying, "The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel." Mk. 1:14,15

Notice repent comes BEFORE belief or faith.

The first message the disciples preached was repentance:

And He summoned the twelve and began to send them out in pairs, and gave them authority over the unclean spirits;

They went out and preached that {men} should repent. Mk. 6:7,12

Jesus last message to the churches was “be zealous and repent.” Rev. 3:19

Five out of seven churches were Repent or else! Sounds like a common thread here!

What is repentance?:

For the sorrow that is according to {the will} {of} God produces a repentance without regret, {leading} to salvation, but the sorrow of the world produces death. 2 Cor 7:10

Two types of sorrow: You can be sorry you got caught.

You can be sorry for the effect of your sins on your own life and others, but you’re not sorry enough to change!

What is the sorrow that is according to {the will} {of} God that produces a repentance without regret, {leading} to salvation?

He who conceals his transgressions will not prosper, But he who confesses and forsakes {them} will find (mercy) compassion. Prov 28:13

......"I do not condemn you, either. Go. From now on sin no more." Jn. 8:11

The exhortation remains the same, and again, it’s more current than the front page of the news paper.

I pray you’ll hear and heed today before it’s to late.

Let anyone who has an ear listen to what the Spirit is saying to the churches!
