Lesson 1 Part 2

Luke 6:46-49 Two Foundations – Two Results

“Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and don’t do the things which I say? 47 Everyone who comes to me, and hears my words, and does them, I will show you who he is like. 48 He is like a man building a house, who dug and went deep, and laid a foundation on the rock. When a flood arose, the stream broke against that house, and could not shake it, because it was founded on the rock. 49 But he who hears, and doesn’t do, is like a man who built a house on the earth without a foundation, against which the stream broke, and immediately it fell, and the ruin of that house was great.”

Matt.7:21 Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven; but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.

The will of God is the Word of God:

Mk.3:35 For whoever does the will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and mother.”

Lk.8:21 But he answered them, “My mother and my brothers are these who hear the word of God, and do it.”

Acts 4:13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and Johnand perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus.

Jesus is the living Word…

The parable of the seed and the sower is recorded 3 times

In Matthew 13, Mark 4, Luke 8

Mark 4:13 And He *said to them, “Do you not understand this parable? How will you understand all the parables?

If you do not understand this parabe, you will not understand any of the parables

Understand “Stand under”

Let me put it this way, Jesus Christ is high and lifted up in a positon of authority…When we understand Jesus we are standing under Him! He is the King we are the servants!

Some of you may be on your phone or watching the TV more than you are in the Word…

The parable of the seed and the sower

READ: Luke 8:4-15

Luke 8:5-8; 11-15 NIV

Four types of people - Hard-hearted / Shallow-hearted / Half-hearted / Whole-hearted

Notice all 4 groups HEAR the Word of God

5a “A farmer went out to sow his seed.

11  This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God.

The Bible says, “Though the grass wither.......King David said, “Forever O’ Lord......Thy Word is a lamp.....

God said in the book of Isaiah For My Word......He told Jeremiah, “You have seen correctly.....

1st group - Hard-hearted

5b As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds ate it up.

12 Those along the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. (Matt.13:19 “sown in his heart” Mk.4:15 “sown in them”)

Even with the person described here, the Word was sown in their heart!

“then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts”

This is Satan’s first business! To take away the Word!

2Cor.4:4 in whose case the god of this world (or age) has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

So, this illustrates those who hear the Word of God and refuse to obey it or profit by it because it says it was in their hearts!

This group of people may include what we call “seekers”

They want to accept Jesus as Savior but not as Lord!

They have not truly repented or turned from sin

Sometimes the church deals with seekers quickly without communicating a proper understanding of the Gospel and its demands!

The people described here have not received the Word

They are not doers of the Word

Js.1:21-25 Therefore, putting away all filthiness and overflowing of wickedness, receive with humility the implanted word, which is able to save your souls. 22 But be doers of the word, and not only hearers, deluding your own selves. 23 For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man looking at his natural face in a mirror; 24 for he sees himself, and goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. 25 But he who looks into the perfect law of freedom, and continues, not being a hearer who forgets, but a doer of the work, this man will be blessed in what he does.

2nd group - Shallow-hearted

6 Some fell on rocky ground, and when it came up, the plants withered because they had no moisture.

13 Those on the rocky ground are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no (firm) root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing (temptation) they fall away.

In the other two places this group is described (Mk.4:16-17; Mt.13:20-21), instead of “believe for a while” the phrase is “endure for a while

A very clear reference to backsliding

These are described as living plants v.6

They have no root…no root in what? The Word of God

They believe for a while…This is the same word that is used in John 3:16 and all throughout the gospel of John when true believing is referred to

These were genuine Christians

The DLNT says “ they are ones who are believing for a time, and are departing in a time of testing.

But…in the time of…Why?

Because they do not continue in the Word

John 8:31-32 So Jesus was saying to those Jews who had believed Him, “If you continue in My wordthen you are truly disciples of Mine; 32 and you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

If you do not continue in the Word you will fall away and continue in sin!

v.34 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who commits sin is the slave of sin. The NENT says “Amen, Amen…”

In V.15  These people forsook the right way...“forsaking the right way, they have gone astray, having followed the way of Balaam, the son of Beor, who loved the wages of unrighteousness”

John the Baptist called Jesus the way of righteousness.

Js.5:19-20 My brethren, if any among you strays from the truth and one turns him back, let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save his soul from death and will cover a multitude of sins.

A brother or sister in Christ becomes a sinner, turns from the error of his way and their soul is saved from death…

The word hear for “death” is eternal death!

What could be clearer?

There are so many other Scriptures on backsliding and the consequences of spiritual and eternal death…

A few…Heb.3:12-14; Heb.10:26-31; Rom.11:19-23

3rd group - Half-hearted

7 Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the plants.

14 The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life’s worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature.

This illustrates those who hear the Word and fail to produce fruit because the Word is choked by three things:

1. The cares of the world (life’s worries) or the lusts of the flesh (Mk. 4:19; Mt. 13:22; Lk. 8:14; 21:34; Gal. 5:19-21; 1Jn. 2:15-17)

2. The deceitfulness of riches or the pride of life (Mk. 4:19; Mt. 13:22; Lk. 8:14; 1Tim. 6:8-10,17; 1Jn. 2:15-17)

3. The lusts of other things or pleasures and the lust of the eyes (Mk. 4:19; Lk. 8:14; 21:34; 1Jn. 2:15-17)

Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world.

And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.

Satan is the god of this present world system 2Cor.4:4

in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God.

Along with a host of evil spirits he controls it Eph.6:12-13

According to 1Jn.2:16, three aspects of the sinful world that create open hostility to God:

The lusts of the flesh: this includes impure desires and running after sinful pleasures and sensual gratification

Jude 1:19 These are the ones who cause divisions, worldly-mindeddevoid (not having) of the Spirit.

Php.3:19 For many, of whom I have often told you and now tell you even with tears, walk as enemies of the cross of Christ. Their end is destruction, their god is their belly, and they glory in their shame, with minds set on earthly things.

Galatians 5:19-21 Now the works of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, moral impurity, promiscuity,20 idolatry, sorcery, hatreds, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, selfish ambitions, dissensions, factions, 21 envy, drunkenness, carousing, and anything similar. I am warning you about these things—as I warned you before—that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

So what’s the answer? Gal.5:24 Crucifixion!

The lust of the eyes: this refers to coveting or lusting after things that are attractive to the eye, but forbidden by God, including the desire to watch that which gives sinful pleasure

This includes the desire to entertain oneself by having lustful thoughts, viewing pornography, violence, ungodliness in all its forms and immorality on stage, on TV, on the internet or in magazines, etc. Mt.5:28-29

The boastful pride of life: this means the spirit of arrogance and self-sufficient independence that does not recognize God as Lord or His Word as final authority

It is the spirit that seeks to exalt, glorify and promote oneself as the center of life…

Jesus said, “If anyone wishes…

Js.4:4…the friend of the world is the enemy of God!

Christians are aliens and strangers in the world 1Pet.2:11

We must:

come out of the world

Jn.15:19 If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you,

not be conformed to the world Rom.12:2,

not love the world 1Jn.2:15,

overcome the world 1Jn.5:4,

hate the worlds evil Heb.1:9,

be dead to the world Gal.6:14-15,

and be delivered from the world

Col.1:13 He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love!

It is impossible to love God and the world at the same time! You cannot serve two masters….Mt. 6:24

People in this third group are:

2 Timothy 3:1-5 But know this: Hard times will come in the last days. For people will be lovers of self (fond of oneself), lovers of money, boastful (braggarts, self exalted), proud (self important)demeaning, disobedient to parents (headstrong children), ungrateful, unholyunloving, irreconcilable, slandererswithout self-control (no control of appetites or passions), brutal, without love for what is good, traitors (betrayers), reckless (rash; hasty; reckless; headstrong), conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of Godholding to the form of godliness but denying its powerAvoid these people.

If we were to be obedient to this passage, we shouldn’t enter through the front door of the majority of churches!...

Paul says to avoid these people!

“holding to the form of godliness”

Their religion is only in their creed and formal confession of so-called faith, not in their hearts

“but denying its power”

They do not believe one can live free from the sins listed here!

You’re either a lover of self or a self denier!

So who will you deny? Yourself or Jesus?

Mk.8:34-38; Mt.16:24-25/Lk.14:26-27

4th group - Whole-hearted

8 Still other seed fell on (into) good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown.” When he said this, he called out, “Whoever has ears to hear, let them hear.”

15 But the seed on (in) good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it (hold it tightly), and by persevering produce a crop (bring forth fruit).

This illustrates those who hear the Word of God, who wholeheartedly and eternally surrender to obey it and to please God in all things.

They get rid of all shallowness, fickleness, and irresponsibility, along with deceitfulness of riches and pleasures, lusts of the flesh, pride of life, and lusts for other things that would hinder them in living for God. They are honest and true and conform to the letter to all known scriptural light as they get to know it

[hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop] Three things required:

 1. "Hear the Word." Over 155 times God commands people to hear Him and His Word.

Not one time is there a hint that what He says will be hard to understand or that it needs any special interpretation.

The entire Bible assumes that what it says is clear enough if people will only believe it as it reads and not change it.

2. "Receive it." This is the main battleground of man.

If people could not understand the Bible there would be some reason for rejecting it.

We covered this extensively in the first Lesson

3. "Bring forth fruit." When the Word of God is received and obeyed it will not return void but will bring forth fruit

Bring forth what fruit? The fruit of the Spirit…Gal.5:22-23

If one does not bring forth fruit, he is cut off from vital union with Christ and cast into the fire…John 15:2,6

How important is letting what you heard from the beginning remain in you?

It has eternal consequences

This is the group “who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop

ENDURANCE - perseverance

So, how important is our endurance?

Lk.21:19 By your endurance you will gain your lives (Lit. souls).

We must engage in the most intense devotion to Christ through the means of endurance, grace, study of the Word, prayer, worship, witness, Christian fellowship and daily resistance to sin.

By persevering in true faith, believers gain eternal life and are victorious in all circumstances.

The “once saved always saved” crowd actually believe and teach that all Christians automatically endure to the end and are saved!

There is not one sentence in the Scriptures that even remotely implies this!

Matt.10:22 "You will be hated by all because of My name, but it is the one who has endured to the end who will be saved.

This statement is Jesus speaking to His disciples that He appointed as Apostles, which is the highest order of the church! Ch.10 v.1-2

The very fact that Jesus said to His disciples which He appointed as Apostles… but it is the one who has endured to the end who will be saved, flies in the face of the teaching that Christians automatically endure to the end!

These false teachers are heretics and are to be rejected and avoided! Titus 3:10; Rom.16:17-18

Now I urge you brethren, to keep your eye on those…

And people say, “Well, doctrine is not important, we should just all unite because we call ourselves Christians”.

1Tim.4:16 Doctrine is of eternal importance!

We are not to listen to any of their teachings, read any of their books or give into their ministries!

3 things to endure

Temptation, tribulation, persecution

Lk.8:13  Those on the rocky soil are those who, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no firm root; they believe for a while, and in time of temptation fall away.

Matt.13:20-21 As for what was sown on rocky ground, this is the one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy,21 yet he has no root in himself, but endures for a while, and when tribulation or persecution arises on account of the word, immediately he falls away.

HEB.12:4 You have not yet resisted to the point of shedding blood in your striving against sin;

Same root word in Luke 13:24 “Be striving”

Endeavor with strenuous zeal – strain your last nerve

The word is kin to the "agony" of the garden Lk. 22:44, and certainly teaches that one must put forth more personal effort than merely "taking it by faith" or casually "accepting" Christ.

Luke 22:43 Now an angel from heaven appeared to Him, strengthening Him.

Luke 22:44 And being in agony He was praying very fervently; and His sweat became like drops of blood, falling down upon the ground.

Listen to me, when you have strained so hard against temptation like Christ did here that your sweat becomes like great drops of blood, then you will know you’ve been in a real battle!

Furthermore, Jesus endured temptation in a desert for 40 days! (Mark 1:13; Luke 4:1-2)

Seven conditions of eternal salvation:

1. Hear the Word of God (Lk. 8:12).

2. Believe and be saved (Lk. 8:12; Mk. 16:16).

3. Maintain an honest and a good heart (Lk. 8:12; Rom. 6:16-23; 8:12-13).

4. Keep the Word of God in the heart (Lk. 8:12; Jn. 15:7).

5. Do not fall away, but be rooted and grounded in truth (Lk. 8:13; Col. 1:23; 2:6-7; Heb. 3:6,12-14; 12:14-15).

6. Obey the Word of God (Lk. 8:15,21; Jas. 2:14-23; Rom. 1:16).

7. Bring forth fruit in perseverance (Lk. 8:15; Jn. 6:27; 15:1-8).
