Lesson 4 The Doctrine Of The New Birth
How to Get Rid of Sin
The following studies on the new birth will make it clear that a man must be saved from all sin and how this can be brought about in his life so that he will know it
Please have your pen and notebook ready because we will give many references to prove the points and for you to study
Jesus answered and said to him, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless
one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
4 Nicodemus said to Him, “How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?”
5 Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
What the New Birth is Not
The new birth is not confirmation, church membership, water baptism, signing a card stating that you accept Christ, taking the sacrament, shaking hands with the preacher, standing up to accept Jesus as a savior, observing religious duties, an intellectual reception of Christianity, orthodoxy of faith, confessing Jesus as the Son of God, joining some church that claims to be the true church, going to church, saying prayers, reading the Bible, memorizing creeds, being moral, being cultured or refined, doing good deeds or doing your best, being as good as the next fellow, or any of the other things that some men are trusting in to save them outside of old–fashioned religion and the experience of the new birth as stated in Scripture.
Neither is the new birth brought about by these things. Nicodemus, whom Jesus addressed concerning the new birth, had most of these qualifications, but Jesus said to him, in Jn.3:8 “You must be born again.” (2Cor.5:17)
What the New Birth Is
The new birth is a new creation from above through a direct operation of the Word of God and the Holy Spirit upon the life, changing a person completely and making him a new creature in Christ.
It is the same as the new creature experience of 2 Corinthians 5:17;
the new creation work of
Ephesians 4:22-24 “that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, 23 and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, 24 and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.”
the salvation experience of Romans 1:16; 10:9-10; 2 Thessalonians 2:13;
the baptism in the body of Christ of 1 Corinthians 12:13 For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.; Galatians 3:27-29;
the experience of being made free from the law of sin and death of Romans 8:1-4;
the adoption into the family of God of Romans 8:14-16;
the turning from Satan to God of Acts 26:18;
the washing from all sin of 1 Corinthians 6:9-11; 1 John 1:6-7; Revelation 1:5;
the remission of sins of Acts 2:38;
the reconciliation to God of Colossians 1:20-23; 2 Corinthians 5:17-21;
and the begetting of one as a child of God of 1 Peter 1:2-4, 18-23; and James 1:18.
The Absolute Necessity of the New Birth
Jesus taught that a man “must be born again” and
“Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God... “Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God...
“Except you be converted, and become as little children, you shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven...
“Except you repent, you shall all likewise perish” (; ; ).
It is all–important that we pay personal attention to our eternal welfare and not trust the best of men.
If we permit men to mislead us in eternal matters and we are lost, it will be too late to see after our welfare; so let us do it now.
Don't take the attitude that you cannot be deceived and that your church is the only right one and cannot mislead you.
This may be true, but it would be wise for you to make sure of it by going to the Bible for yourself and seeing with your own eyes and knowing from your own heart that you are right with God and that you have had a real new birth and that you are living right with God every day.
Don't let any religion make you think you are all right just because you have conformed to its teachings.
You may still be lost. Make sure about it.
There is no use fooling yourself. That will not get you anywhere except to eternal hell.
You are either born again or you are not.
You are either wheat or tares….
You are either really saved, or you are being deceived into thinking that you are, or you know that you are lost.
It will pay you to examine yourself, and see if you are really right with God. 2Cor.13:5
Thus, it is clearly stated that the new birth is a necessity if one wants to be reconciled to God.
No person can be saved without it. No person can get to Heaven without it.
Jn.3:7 Do not marvel that I said to you, ‘You must be born again.’
It is the one “must” of the Christian faith, so it is critically important that we learn everything we can about the new birth—and get it—in order to be eternally saved.
The Apostle Paul recorded the same thing in the Scriptures when he said in
The new birth, being born again and the new creation are ways the Scripture says the exact same thing
[Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature]
Therefore, in view of the fact that we do not know any man after the flesh, not even Christ, it is vain for any man to profess relationship with Christ according to the flesh, while he is unchanged in heart and life and dead in trespasses and sins.
[in Christ, he is a new creature]
Seven Personal Gospel Blessings from 2Cor.5:17-18
1. It brings one into Christ
2. One is a new creature
3. Old things are passed away.
The Greek word for "old" is archaios (GSN-<G744>), ancient, original, old.
Such things are no more in a person
4. All things are new.
The life is just the opposite of the old life.
5. All things are of God
The true Christian does not permit anything in his life which is ungodly and unChristlike (Rom. 6:14-23; 8:1-13; Gal. 5:16-26).
6. One is reconciled to God (2Cor. 5:18; Rom. 5:10; Eph. 2:14-18; Col. 1:20-21).
7. He has part in the ministry of reconciliation (2Cor. 5:18-20; 1:18-24).
[old things are passed away]
Two Old Things that Pass Away
No.1. The spirit, nature, and power of sin the old man, which is nothing more nor less than the spirit, nature, and power of the devil working in men of disobedience (Jn. 8:44; Eph. 2:2 “And you were dead in your trespasses and sins in which you formerly walked according to…2Cor. 4:4 “in whose case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the unbelieving so that they might not see the light of the gospel of the glory of Christ…1Jn. 3:8; 5:18).
This is what the Bible calls:
(1) The old man (Rom. 6:6; Eph. 4:22; Col. 3:9)
(2) Sin (Jn. 1:29; 8:34; Rom. 6:4-Rom. 8:2)
(3) The body of sin (Rom. 6:6)
(4) The power of Satan (Acts 26:18)
(5) The body of this death (Rom. 7:24)
(6) The lusts of the flesh (Eph. 2:3; 1Jn. 2:15-17)
(7) The lust of the eyes (1Jn. 2:15-17)
(8) The pride of life (1Jn. 2:15-17)
(9) The works of the flesh (Gal. 5:19-21)
(10) The world (1Jn. 2:15-17; Jas. 4:4)
(11) Vile affections (Rom. 1:26,29)
(12) The lusts of the mind (Eph. 2:3)
(13) The lusts of sin (Rom. 6:11-12)
(14) The motions of sins (Rom. 7:5)
(15) The law of sin and death (Rom. 7:7 -- Rom. 8:2)
(16) The carnal mind (Rom. 8:1-13)
(17) The god of this world (2Cor. 4:4)
(18) Spiritual wickedness in high places ... rulers of darkness (Eph. 6:12)
(19) The lusts of your father (Jn. 8:44)
(20) Sin that dwelleth in me (Rom. 7:17)
(21) The course of this world, the prince of the power of the air, the spirit now working in the sons of disobedience (Eph. 2:2)
(22) The body of the sins of the flesh (Col. 2:11; Gal. 5:24; Rom. 8)
No.2. Outward sin or transgression of the law (1Jn. 3:4; Rom. 4:15; Jas. 1:13-15).
The outward acts are listed in (Mk. 7:19-21; Rom. 1:18-32; 2Cor. 6:9-11; Gal. 5:19-21; Col. 3:5-10)
Both outward and inward sin must pass away or one cannot claim to be in Christ.
The theory that only outward transgressions are forgiven and one is still under control of the old man who is (the devil) is one of the most false doctrines in Christendom (2Cor. 5:17-18; Eph. 4:24; 1Jn. 5:18; Rom. 6:6-23; 8:1-13). See notes, 1Th. 4:3; 2Th. 2:13).
Jn. 3:5 Jesus answered, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God.
Born of water and the Spirit – what is the water?
Not the natural birth, for Nicodemus already had this birth and he was told he had to be born again of both water and Spirit.
Not water baptism. Many in Christ's ministry were forgiven without water baptism (Matthew 9:1-7,22; Mark 5:34; Mark 10:52; Luke 7:48; Luke 17:19; Luke 18:9-14; Luke 19:1-9; Luke 23:43; John 4:49-53; John 7:31; John 8:30-31; John 11:45; John 12:11,42).
Men have been baptized in the Holy Spirit before water baptism (Acts 9:17; Acts 10:44-48; Acts 11:14-18; Acts 15:7-11).
Christ was baptized in water without forgiveness of sins (Matthew 3:15-17).
Since men are cleansed and born again by the Word according to 1 Peter 1:23; James 1:18
1Pet.1:23 “having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever”,
Js.1:18 “Of His own will He brought us forth (or gave us birth) by the word of truth, that we might be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures.”,
it is clear that being born of water means being born again by the Word of God.
Eph.5:25-26 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for it, 26 that He might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word,
not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit,
You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you.
Gal.6:14-15…For neither is circumcision anything nor uncircumcision, but a new creation.
Hallelujah! There is again! A NEW CREATION!
Some people say, “I can never stop being my father’s son.” However, are we to compare the new birth with the natural birth?
This is exactly what Jesus told Nichodemus not to do in Jn3:12 “If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?
The Apostle Paul also addresses this in 1Cor.2:13 “These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
You see the natural birth is a coming into being without our choice and the new birth is a creative act of God based on our choice
2Cor.4:6 “ For God, who said, “Light shall shine out of darkness,” is the One who has shone in our hearts to give the Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.”
The new birth is SPIRITUAL SURGERY
And this may surprise some of you, it is not just a New Testament principal!
Dt.30:6 “Moreover the Lord your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your descendants, to love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, so that you may live.
Dt.10:16 So circumcise your heart, and stiffen your neck no longer.
Ac.7:51 “You men who are stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears are always resisting the Holy Spirit; you are doing just as your fathers did.
Are you starting to see the flow of the Old Testament to the New Testament here?
Rom.2:29 But he is a Jew who is one inwardly; and circumcision is that which is of the heart, by the Spirit, not by the letter; and his praise is not from men, but from God.
Col.2:11-12 and in Him you were also circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, in the removal of the body of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ; 12 having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead.
The “baptism” referred to here is NOT water baptism it is baptism into Christ and into His death
Rom.6:3-8 “Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? 4 Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. 5 For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection, 6 knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin; 7 for he who has died is freed from sin.
So we see very clearly here, the true born again Christian has been baptized into Christ Jesus, baptized into His death, buried with Him through baptism into death, raised from the dead, so we too might walk in newness of life!
We KNOW that “our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin”!
“for he who has died is freed from sin”! Somebody has to die here!
“Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him”!
Listen to me, the only way you’re going to live with Christ in heaven is if your old sin life is completely exterminated!
Remember, according to Col.2:11, the body of the flesh has been surgically removed! It has been cut away!
So, What is the “flesh”?
1 It cannot be the physical body because we are told to crucify it
The flesh must be crucified to come to salvation and stay with salvation!
2 The answer is graphically shown by revealing its sinful deeds in Gal. 5:19-21
“Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.”
The flesh means living in sin!
3 Remember again, terms as the flesh, the old man, the body of sin and the body of the flesh are all terms in the Bible for the old life!
The old man is crucified with Christ and the body of sin is destroyed Rom.6:5-8
4 The body of the flesh has been surgically removed Col.2:11
Romans 7:5 For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions which were aroused by the law were at work in our members to bear fruit to death.
“Were ,were, were”
[in the flesh] Here again meaning living in sin!
The sinful passions that were working in our members before we came to Christ!
It is the spirit that works in the sons of disobedience.
o Eph.2:1-3 And you were dead in the trespasses and sins 2 in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— 3 among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.
o We WERE dead in trespasses and sins – past tense – once walked!
o the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience is no longer at work in the Christian!
o we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind – past tense!
To call the “flesh” the Adamic nature is not correct
Adam and Eve still had the same spirit, soul and body after the fall that they had before the fall.
There was simply a change of masters: Matthew 6:22-24
The spirit, soul and body of a person must be fully consecrated to God as opposed to the devil.
o Romans 6:13 and do not go on presenting the members of your body to sin as instruments (or weapons) of unrighteousness; but present yourselves to God as those alive from the dead, and your members as instruments (or weapons) of righteousness to God.
o Your body is either carrying out the desires of the flesh or the desires of the Spirit, one or the other! You cannot do both! Jesus said this is impossible! Mt.6:24
For those who are being lead…Lead by the Spirit of God to do what?
Put to death the misdeeds of the body because the misdeeds of the body is living in sin! Rom.7:5
And if you live in the flesh you must die!
It brings spiritual death!
o Romans 8:8-9 So then, those who are in the flesh cannot please God. But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.
o You cannot be in the flesh and in the Spirit at the same time.
Paul is saying here, You Christians are not minding the things of the flesh but the things of the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you.
If you do not have the Spirit you do not belong to Christ.
In other words, if you are minding the things of the flesh you prove that you do not have the Spirit of Christ and therefore do not belong to Him (Romans 8:8-9; 1Jn.3:7-10,etc.).
If Christ is in you (2Cor.5:17,18), the body is dead to all sin, and the Spirit dominates your life as you live to all righteousness!
Romans 8:10 If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness.
2Cor.5:17 when you become a new creation in Christ the old life of sin has been annihilated!
Gal.5:24 And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.
True Christians are in a lifelong struggle AGAINST sin not WITH sin! (Heb.12:4)
Are you truly born again?
There is more we could teach on this, but we’ve given more than enough for you to know beyond a shadow of a doubt if you really have the new birth or not
So, the challenge this word brings to you is found in 2Cor.13:5
Have you passed the test of this Word today?
Has the spirit, nature, and power of sin the old man, which is nothing more nor less than the spirit, nature, and power of the devil working in men of disobedience passed away from you?
Has outward sin or transgression of the law passed away from you?
Are you really saved, or are you being deceived into thinking that you are?
How is the new birth received?
(1) Recognize that you are a sinner and lost, without God and without hope (Rom. 3:23; Eph. 2:11-13; 1 Jn. 1:9).
If a person will not acknowledge that he is a sinner, he cannot be saved.
(2) Come to God repenting of your sins and turning away from all sin, pleading the merits of the blood of Christ in the name of Jesus Christ, and you shall be born again; that is, the Holy Spirit will then definitely make you a new creature, cleansing you from all sin by the authority of the Word of God and by the blood of Christ that was shed to atone for your sins (2 Cor. 5:17; Acts 3:19; 2Cor.7:10)
(3) You must believe from the heart when you confess with the mouth that God does forgive you of your sins and that He does cleanse you from all unrighteousness (Rom. 10:9-10) But what does it say? “The word is near you, in your mouth and in your heart”—that is, the word of faith which we are preaching…
If all people were required to really repent and pray until they knew that God had forgiven them and until they received the evidences of the new birth then we would not have so many sinning Christians; that is, people who are sinners and who claim that they are Christians.
15) When people find true biblical salvation, will they stick with it forsake all sin? (2 Corinthians 7:10)
